Our Story

Building with
Conviction

Marecrest Capital (Pty) Ltd is a Stellenbosch-based property development company founded in 2012. Formerly operating as Patron Capital SA, the company has been rebranded to reflect its refined focus on South African real estate and to acknowledge its independence from the broader Patron Capital Partners group.

Our strategy is built on identifying structural supply-demand imbalances in university towns and urban precincts — markets where purpose-driven, quality development consistently outperforms. We design, develop, and where appropriate retain assets that deliver durable income and capital appreciation.

In addition to development, the company has selectively provided short-term bridge financing secured by first mortgage bond over property — a complementary activity undertaken on a limited basis alongside our core development mandate.

Over thirteen years, Marecrest Capital has completed six residential developments across Potchefstroom and Stellenbosch, delivering quality residential accommodation in two of South Africa's most active university markets.

Marecrest Capital (Pty) Ltd was formerly registered and operated as Patron Capital SA (Pty) Ltd (Reg. No. 2011/130695/07). The company was rebranded in 2025 to reflect its position as a fully independent South African development platform.

Marecrest Capital has no ongoing operational, financial or structural connection to Patron Capital Partners LLP or any of its associated entities. All existing development commitments, investor relationships and contractual obligations continue unchanged under the Marecrest Capital (Pty) Ltd name.

Company registration and director details are available on request.

Mackenzie Johnson
Managing Director & Founder
Mackenzie Johnson is the founder and Managing Director of Marecrest Capital, and has led the company since its establishment in Stellenbosch in 2012. A Chartered Accountant (SA) and member of SAICA, he brings over two decades of financial and real estate expertise to every development.
Marecrest Capital is now a fully independent South African development platform. Mackenzie oversees every aspect of the development process — from deal sourcing and site acquisition, through design, planning and rezoning, to construction management, sales and asset management — supported at each stage by an appointed team of specialist professionals.

Our Model

Lean by Design.
Specialist by Choice.

Marecrest Capital operates as a focused development platform — not a large corporate developer. Every project is delivered through an appointed team of specialist professionals, engaged per development based on expertise, track record and local knowledge.

This typically includes an architect, structural and civil engineer, quantity surveyor, principal contractor, electrical and mechanical consultants, a conveyancing attorney, auditors and tax advisors, and a letting or sales agent. Each appointment is project-specific and formally contracted.

This model keeps our fixed overhead low, our accountability clear, and our professional standards high. It is the same structure used to deliver all six of our completed developments across Potchefstroom and Stellenbosch since 2012.

Governance

Development Governance.
Financial Discipline on Every Project.

Each Marecrest development is managed under a structured governance framework established over thirteen years of active development.

Professional teams are formally appointed with clearly defined scopes of work. Construction contracts are competitively tendered. Quantity surveyor oversight is maintained throughout the build, with monthly cost reporting produced against approved budgets. Contingency provisions are managed actively and not drawn without justification.

This discipline has underpinned consistent delivery across our completed portfolio — and it is the standard we apply to every new project, regardless of scale.

Our Approach

How We
Develop

Market Identification
We focus on university towns and urban precincts with structural supply shortfalls — locations where quality accommodation consistently achieves full occupancy and strong yields regardless of broader market cycles.
Quality Development
Every Marecrest development is built to a specification that attracts and retains quality tenants. From solar backup systems to EV charging, our developments are designed for long-term performance, not short-term margin.
Investor Alignment
We structure transactions to align with investor objectives — whether through en-bloc sales to institutional buyers, joint venture arrangements, or the selective retention of assets within our own balance sheet.
Professional Team
Every Marecrest development is delivered with a formally appointed professional team. This includes an architect, structural and civil engineer, quantity surveyor, principal contractor, electrical and mechanical consultants, conveyancing attorney, auditors and tax advisors, and a letting or sales agent. Appointments are project-specific, competitively selected and formally contracted — ensuring clear accountability at every stage of the development process.
